Payton's World of Opportunity

Friends, family, and colleagues –

Let me begin with a cliche: Happy Holidays!.

Now that the mood is set, let me explain what this is all about. As most of you probably know, I'm involved a great deal with the organization Engineers Without Borders. This is a fantastic group dedicated to international development, through a few different approaches. One major focus is on creating links between rural Africa and Canada. It is my personal belief, and one shared by the organization, that by creating a feeling of solidarity with people on the other side of the world, we can make small changes in our lives that improve life for everyone.

It is with this goal in mind that I am asking for donations to EWB. Next summer (2010), I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to travel overseas to Africa (not sure where yet :)). I will be volunteering with a local NGO to help build their capacity to create change. Perhaps the larger goal, however, is one of learning and sharing. I will be learning about another culture, their challenges and triumphs, and how my everyday actions have far-reaching reactions. Upon my return to Canada, it will be my goal to share what I have learned, and to try and foster an attitude in my community of compassion for the people in tough situations overseas.

EWB and myself are dedicated to transforming the common perception that Africa is impoverished and helpless into a picture of hope and ingenuity. By exposing Canadians to this view, I believe it will help them make impactful choices such as buying Fair Trade or making ethical investments, that will contribute to African prosperity.

This is why I am asking you to support EWB’s work this holiday season. I believe that EWB is a powerful vehicle for creating positive change. EWB is seeking to increase its impact – by doubling its volunteer capacity and flexibility to innovate. I know that they will use your donation effectively, and continue to make great things happen.

This holiday season please donate to my World of Opportunity campaign and support my passion and commitment to EWB. Together, we can help increase the opportunities for rural Africans to thrive.
